Toyota's new FJ Cruiser - wow! We get many calls from new owners who want to take full advantage of this great platform. The factory rack system on the FJC can easily be adapted to carry a tent by adding Thule's 450 Crossroads clamps and standard cross bars.
It seems that the Toyota Land Cruiser is the vehicle of choice for people who want to travel to far off places. We have been fortunate to supply many of their tents, and they often send us updates and pictures. All of the Landcruiser models can be fitted with AutoHome tents—from the classic FJ40 and 45, the FJ55s, the 60 series, the FJ80 & FZJ80 and the 100 series (also the Lexus 450’s). Landcruisers—with or without factory racks - are rated in the US at 165 lbs., so any of our tents can be fitted, but you will need medium (or smaller) sized Maggiolina or Columbus tents for best aerodynamics.
The older 4runner’s factory rack is rated at 100 pounds. So we use either Thule Aero Towers or Yakima Q-Towers that lock into the doorframes for the first two crossbars. This gives a 165 lb. load carrying capacity. Also, we usually use a third bar in the rear that uses the factory tracks since many of these trucks are going offroad.
The Sequoia is rated at 165 lbs. but we are hearing that the factory roof rails do not hold up under prolonged pounding, so if you’re headed into the rough stuff, you should consider the Tracker II or Aerofoot designs from Thule, or the Yakima Control Tower.
The Toyota trucks— Hi-Lux, Tacoma, T-100, and Tundra can easily be fitted with AutoHome tents using ‘lumber’ racks, artificial gutters and aftermarket towers, or the proprietary designs from Yakima or Thule on camper shells. Be sure that the camper shell is secured properly to the truck.
The Sienna, fitted with Yakima Q Towers is spec’d for 165 lbs., but the Factory rack is only rated for 110 lbs. Do your homework, or call us for assistance.
